Burns, Robert Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect 2 Volumes
Edinburgh: Cadell and Creech 1798
Early Edition -- title page states 'A New Edition, Considerably Enlarged'. Top edge gilt, ribbon bookmarks, marbled endpapers. Beautifully bound in green and brown leather, with raised bands to spine, gilt embellishments to covers and spine -- thistles, a crest, and date (1798). The leather is in excellent condition overall, with a few minor scrapes and rubbing to the spine edges. the two front end papers in volume 1 are loose, and they're cracking in the second volume as well. The endpapers are of different composition than the text itself, which remains bright, with mild agetoning to edges, occasional foxing; the later pages are more agetoned and foxed, probably due to proximity to chemicals in the endpapers. Ribbon bookmarks are intact but delicate. Small penciled inscription on one fep. A lovely set overall.
